Maine Ice Out Fishing

Maine Ice Out Fishing Has Begun!

Ice has been out for only a few days, the water is warming from the mid 40’s and the smelt runs are in full swing.  Water levels are dropping to fishable levels in the Aroostrook and Allagash watersheds and Chandler Lake Camps and Lodge is right here in the middle of the Ice Out Fishing action for you!  The fish are starting to cooperate with little rain forecast in the next week.  Bring on the sun!

If your goal is a Trophy class Allagash Brook Trout of 20+ inches pushing over 4 lbs. the next few weeks are prime time to make that happen!  After the long North Maine Woods winter our Native Wild Brook Trout congregate on the numerous boulder strewn shorelines, always on the hunt for a meal.  Our Ice Out Fishing consists of trolling with long fly rods, sinking lines with a long leader and tandem smelt patterns.  We also add to this tactic by casting streamers toward shore around all those boulders, letting your line swing behind the boat.  We fish from our boats of choice being Grand Laker Style or 21 ft. Scott Boats, these being very comfortable, safe and stable.  With the smelt runs peaking we also concentrate our efforts morning and evening around the mouths of any active brook or stream. Primarily sinking lines seems to work best for us at this time.  This Ice Out Fishing action can be fast and furious on voracious fish filling up on smelt as the bounty of Spring arrives here in the North Maine Woods.

Come and join the fun and tight lines!
