2018 Maine Ice Out Fishing

Maine Ice Out Fishing is just around the corner!

Maine Ice Out Fishing is almost upon us!  Things are changing fast this time of season. Ten days ago, we returned to the lodge for the season, via snowmobile unfortunately! During that period, things have warmed up and stayed mild. With more than 2 inches of warm rain, water is running everywhere and we can see the light at the end of the Maine Ice Out tunnel.

Our early spring Maine Ice Out Fishing starts on the Headwater lakes of the Allagash and Aroostook watersheds. Chamberlain, Big Eagle, Churchill and more. The added bonus to warmer weather and the fading ice is the fast-approaching SMELT runs. Smelt stage in deep water just off the mouth of rivers, brooks and streams waiting for the signal to begin spawning. The signal is water temps above 40 degrees, requiring the snow and spring run-off to be nearly gone. Smaller streams will warm first then larger and so on. We do our homework so it allows us to chase smelts for more than a couple of weeks. Each presenting a unique opportunity to have some great Maine Ice Out Fishing.

Maine Ice Out Fishing Trolling Trout

2017 produced a number of 60 fish days per boat!

Our Maine Wild Brook Trout, Salmon and Lake Trout come to the surface and feed aggressively on smelt resulting in a phenomenal feeding frenzy!  We exploit this time of year fishing from 21 ft. Scott Boats and Grand Laker style canoes.  Safe, stable and comfortable watercraft.  Trolling flies, spoons and lures can provide non-stop action, combined with casting smelt imitations at feeder streams it gets no better anywhere!

Combine this with a hot shore lunch in a beautiful remote setting and you have created lasting memories for young and old alike.

Maine Ice Out Fishing Shore Lunch

Our days start with breakfast in the main dining room followed by a short drive or walk to the selected water. A full day of fishing with an experienced guide and a great shore lunch.
